The price of gasoline continues to hover near the three dollar per gallon mark and there seems to be little evidence that the price will come down anytime soon. That being the case, most Americans are concerned about how the price of gas affects their pocketbooks. A tank of gas that may have cost just $20 six or seven years ago now costs $60; for many people, that difference in price can put a significant dent in their monthly budgets.
In a previous article on how to economize on gas, we covered a number of things that you can do to reduce your consumption at the pump. Here are some more tips that may help reduce your monthly fuel expenses:
- Keep your gas cap on tightly - Ever see someone driving around with a rag hanging out of their gas tank? Aside from the fact that they look like they are driving a Molotov Cocktail, they are also losing a lot of gas to evaporation. There’s a reason why gas tanks have a cap; it keeps the gas in the tank from evaporating into the atmosphere. Gas that evaporates provides zero miles per gallon, so if you don’t have a cap, get one. If you do have a cap, keep it tight.
- Replace your air filter regularly. Along with keeping your car in tune, this will help you reduce your gas consumption. Engines require adequate air intake in order to run properly. A clogged air filter inhibits the air flow and makes your engine work harder to get you down the road. Replace your filter regularly.
