More ways to save on high gas prices

In our previous article on how to save money on gas, we covered a number of things that you can do to economize on your gasoline use and expenses. Here are some additional tips that may come in handy in order to keep you from going broke at the pump.

More tips on how to reduce your gasoline consumption

The price of gasoline continues to hover near the three dollar per gallon mark and there seems to be little evidence that the price will come down anytime soon. That being the case, most Americans are concerned about how the price of gas affects their pocketbooks. A tank of gas that may have cost just $20 six or seven years ago now costs $60; for many people, that difference in price can put a significant dent in their monthly budgets.

In a previous article on how to economize on gas, we covered a number of things that you can do to reduce your consumption at the pump. Here are some more tips that may help reduce your monthly fuel expenses:

  • Keep your gas cap on tightly - Ever see someone driving around with a rag hanging out of their gas tank? Aside from the fact that they look like they are driving a Molotov Cocktail, they are also losing a lot of gas to evaporation. There’s a reason why gas tanks have a cap; it keeps the gas in the tank from evaporating into the atmosphere. Gas that evaporates provides zero miles per gallon, so if you don’t have a cap, get one. If you do have a cap, keep it tight.
  • Replace your air filter regularly. Along with keeping your car in tune, this will help you reduce your gas consumption. Engines require adequate air intake in order to run properly. A clogged air filter inhibits the air flow and makes your engine work harder to get you down the road. Replace your filter regularly.
  • Keep your car cool - That means parking in the shade when possible and parking in your garage, especially in the summertime. The additional heat in the summer increases evaporation from your tank. It also heats the inside of your car and makes your air conditioner work harder to cool down the passenger compartment. Heat, evaporation and additional work all add up to additional use of gas. Keep your car cool.
  • Use the right grade of gasoline - Many people use premium gas out of habit or because they think that their car will run better if they use it. In fact, very few cars actually require the use of premium fuel. Most run fine on regular. Check your owner’s manual and see what type of fuel is recommended by the manufacturer for use in your car. If it calls for regular and you are using premium, you are getting no additional benefit and you are throwing away the difference in price every time you fuel up.
  • None of these things, in and of themselves, will save a lot on gas. On the other hand, if you implement all of them, you may see a noticeable difference in the amount of money you spend on gasoline each month. With prices expected to stay high for the foreseeable future, every gallon of gas you save is extra money you have in your pocket.
