Lemon Laws by State
While all 50 states have passed legislation that offer relief to owners of vehicles with defects or recurrent problems, the laws vary from state to state.

Alabama -Alabama’s Lemon law covers new vehicles for up to one year and 12,000 miles

Alaska - Alaska’s lemon law protects consumers for one year following delivery of the vehicle

Arizona -Arizona’s Lemon Law applies for two years or 24,000 miles.

Arkansas - Arkansas’ lemon law covers new vehicles for two years or 24,000 miles

California -California was the first state to enact a law offering consumer protection in the case of perpetually defective vehicles. The CA lemon law also allows for compensation in the case of used vehicles.

Colorado -Colorado’s lemon law covers cars, vans and pickup trucks for a period of one year from the date of purchase.

Connecticut - Connecticut’s lemon law covers new cars for two years or 18,000 miles

Delaware - Delaware’s lemon law covers most new passenger vehicles for one year

Florida -Florida’s Lemon Law applies to new or demonstrator vehicles either sold or leased.

Georgia -The Motor Vehicle Warranty Rights Act offers relief to consumers who have purchased or leased a new car in Georgia.

Hawaii - Idaho’s statute covers most new vehicles for up to two years and 24,000 miles

Idaho - Idaho’s statute covers most new vehicles for up to two years and 24,000 miles

Indiana - The Indiana Lemon Law covers personal cars and light trucks for 18 months or 18,000 miles

Illinois - The Illinois Lemon Law covers personal cars, light trucks and recreational vehicles

Iowa - Iowa’s lemon law protects consumers for two years or 24,000 miles

Kansas - Kansas’ lemon law protects consumers for one year following delivery of the vehicle

Kentucky - The Kentucky Lemon Law covers new cars only for a period of one year or 12,000 miles.

Louisiana - The Louisiana Lemon Law covers new cars only for a period of one year.

Maine - Maine’s statute provides protection for up to three years or 18,000 miles

Maryland - The Maryland Lemon Law covers personal cars, light trucks and motorcycles for 15,000 miles

Massachusetts -Massachusetts’ law covers both new and used vehicles for up to 15,000 miles

Michigan - The Michigan lemon law covers new and leased cars for up to one year.

Minnesota - The Minnesota lemon law covers new and leased cars for up to two years.

Mississippi - Mississippi’s lemon law covers vehicles for one year

Missouri - The MO lemon law covers new cars, leased cars and demonstrator vehicles

Montana - Montana’s statute covers cars for up two two years or 18,000 miles

Nebraska - The Nebraska lemon law covers almost all vehicles, both personal and commercial

Nevada - The Nevada lemon law protects buyers of new vehicles for up to 12 months from purchase

New Hampshire - New Hampshire’s law covers cars, trucks and more for the term of the warranty

New Jersey - New Jersey’s law covers cars or motorcycles for up two two years or 18,000 miles

New Mexico - New Mexico’s statute covers new automobiles for up to one year from purchase.

New York - New York covers original owners for up to two years or 18,000 miles.

North Carolina - North Carolina covers owners of cars, vans, motorcycles and trucks for two years.

North Dakota -North Dakota covers new vehicles for up to one year and 12,000 miles

Ohio - Ohio covers the original owner for up to one year or 18,000 miles

Oklahoma -Oklahoma covers vehicles for up to one year from purchase

Oregon -Oregon covers new vehicles for up to one year and 12,000 miles

Pennsylvania - The PA lemon law covers vehicles designed to transport up to 15 people

Rhode Island - The Rhode Island lemon law covers vehicles for one year or 15,000 miles

South Carolina -South Carolina covers new vehicles for up to one year and 12,000 miles

South Dakota -South Dakota covers new vehicles for up to one year and 12,000 miles

Tennessee -Tennessee’s lemon law covers cars, trucks and motorcycles for one year

Texas -Texas’ lemon law has been in place since 1983, and has helped more than 10,000 people

Utah - Utah’s rather weak lemon law covers your vehicle for a mere 7500 miles. Drive slowly.

Vermont - Vermont’s lemon law is good for the duration of the manufacturer’s warranty

Virginia -Virginia’s Motor Vehicle Warranty Enforcement Act is good for 18 months from purchase

Washington -Washington’s law covers most consumer vehicles for a period of up to two years.

West Virginia - West Virginia’s law covers new cars and light trucks for one year

Wisconsin -Wisconsin’s law covers cars, trucks, motorcycles or motor homes

Wyoming - Wyoming’s law covers most passenger vehicles for one year
