Summer driving trips more enjoyable if you drive safely

Summertime is when most people take vacations, usually by car. That’s fine; it is still often the most economical way to travel. Your trip will be more enjoyable if you take the time to prepare ahead of time.

More below.

Tips for a safer and more enjoyable summer driving trip

Unlike most countries in Europe, the United States does not have a particularly well developed passenger rail system. If it did, Americans would most likely take their annual summer vacations by rail, which offers a nice view and a relaxing ride. But America is a country of wide open spaces and great distances, so Americans usually have only the option of driving or flying. Granted, the bus is still an option, but a cross country trip by bus is a grueling adventure that isn’t suitable for everyone.

All trips are more enjoyable if you take the time to prepare ahead of time. Before you go out on a trip, you should have your car tuned up and inspected by a mechanic to make sure it is in good shape for a long drive. Once you are on the road, you should take advantage of numerous ways to save on gasoline. At prices of more than $3 per gallon, every drop saved is worthwhile.

Here are some other things that you should consider before taking a summer trip by automobile.:

  • Make sure that your tires are properly inflated, that your oil is freshly changed, and that your air filter is clean.
  • Make sure that you are well rested before starting your trip.
  • Check for the optimum route. Fewer miles can save you gas and time. You can plan your trip using the help of the American Automobile Association, Web sites such as Mapquest, or software programs such as Microsoft’s Automap.
  • Make sure that your air conditioner is working correctly, or your trip could be a hot one.
  • Take occasional breaks once on the road. It isn’t healthy or safe to drive 8, 10, or 12 hours at a stretch.
  • Make sure that your spare tire is in good shape and is properly inflated. It would also help to have some flares, some triangle reflectors and a first aid kit in your car.
  • Drive the speed limit. You don’t want to get pulled over for speeding. Driving at or near the speed limit will also help your gas mileage.
  • Don’t forget to carry your proof of insurance and your vehicle registration. You will almost certainly have to provide these should you be stopped by law enforcement.

Driving across the United States can certainly be a fun way to spend the summer. American’s unique geographical features, landmarks and national and state parks can make any trip an adventure. The last thing you want to do when you take a summer vacation is spend your time in the auto shop or the hospital. Either one is possible if you fail to make sure that your car is in good condition to make the trip.

When traveling, safety should be of paramount concern. You want to make sure that you arrive at your destination in a timely manner, but you also want to make sure that you arrive safely. If you don’t then you have pretty much wasted your vacation, haven’t you?
